I Am Infans

Infans is the Latin word meaning "one who cannot speak." I Am Infans gives symbolic form to ineffable traumatic experiences and the lasting loss of voice that can result from childhood trauma. It explores childhood trauma and how it fragments identity.

This is the completed version of my short experimental film, created as part of a multidisciplinary installation exploring childhood trauma, dissociation, memory, and identity.

Developed from imagery of the constructed figure Infans and influenced by 1960s children’s programmes, the film evokes a fragmented, dreamlike space. It accompanies an installation incorporating the charred cot from my earlier installation ‘Nigredo’, together with the fabric figures ‘Infans’, ‘Ragdoll’, and ‘Untitled Baby’.

The film forms part of my ongoing doctoral research investigating how creative practice can facilitate self-transformation through the externalisation of unconscious material in symbolic form.
